Welcome to my January 2005 issue of “Hope, Health & Humor”

Hope:
Tsunami, a word most elementary school kids had never heard, until
now. The whole world has been touched by this devastation
but I see hope for humanity, in the way people are reaching out to
lend support for the victims.
This disaster struck 12 countries physically, and many others
emotionally. I am moved by the schools, churches,
celebrities and
organizations all over the world who are pitching in.
The message in our book “Open My Eyes, Open My Soul” is that we
all share a common humanity and what affects one of us affects us
all.
Thanks to all who are realizing that and helping to make the world
a
better place, by supporting the victims of the Tsunami.

Health:
Are you old enough to remember that cereal commercial with the
phrase “If you can pinch more than and inch, then it’s time for
Special K?”
Well, I have my own weight gain test. When my underwear
start only
fitting one cheek, instead of two……then it’s time. Only I
don’t think
cereal alone is going to do the job. However, they are on
the right
track with adding more fiber to our diets or I could just by a
thong?
Weight gain has always fascinated and frustrated me. I don’t
have a
problem losing weight. In fact I recently lost 210 lbs. and
gained an
ex-husband, but that’s a whole different story.
What fascinates me is that there are numerous ways people can lose
weight when motivated, and that different things work for
different
people. What frustrates me is seeing the rise in drastic
measures such
as surgery, gastric bypass as an example.
There are “reasons” why people are overweight and surgery does NOT
remove or change the WHY someone is overweight.
I read that Sharon Osbourne had her stomach stapled but is STILL
bulimic. She still eats until she throws up, but only now it
is a much
faster process since, she doesn’t need as much food to make her
sick.
Does this seem foolish to anyone else but me? She didn’t
solve her
problem with surgery, but she risked her life in the process.
Sure, she
lost some weight, but at what COST to her health?
Okay, enough capital letters. I’ll stop shouting, but this
subject
makes me want to shout.
I am a true believer that simple life-style changes, (new diet and
added
exercise) over a period of time, and doing some emotional
investigation as to why you over eat is the best way to lose
weight. I have seen too many people succeed to believe
otherwise.
Also, maybe you are not over eating. Maybe your age and
hormone shift has just made eating the same foods harder to burn.
I know that’s my story, but that just means I may need to put on
my walking shoes and pick up the pace. It now takes more activity
to maintain the same weight, in my case.
You may just need to make 2 or 3 adjustments in your life.
How about simply adding some more fiber to your diet, and drinking
more water? Do you take EFA’s, essential fatty acids, which
stop sweet and fat cravings? There are lots of little life
style changes you can make that will make a difference or you can
make a full swing change and work out everyday and totally over
haul your food choices. It is up to you how you do it, but
it CAN be done.
There are many nutritional supplements that can help you safely
lose the weight faster, while you are developing new eating (diet)
and exercise habits and working on the emotions that may cause you
to over eat, but these are temporary “boosters” to a new program.
They aren’t the program itself, only a part of a whole.
We have emotional, mental, and spiritual needs as well as the
physical.
Why not spend some time investigating a holistic approach to
weight
loss?
Check out my site for ideas in setting new “Health Goals” and
create a
program for yourself that will be “doable” and enjoyable so that
2005 is a much healthier year for you!
